The R. Howard Dobbs, Jr. Foundation is a private charitable foundation established in 1959. The founder, Mr. R. Howard Dobbs, Jr., was born in Atlanta in 1906. His distinguished career at the Life Insurance Company of Georgia began in 1925. After holding several positions within the company, Mr. Dobbs served as President and Chief Executive Officer for a 22-year period from 1948-1970. He then became Chairman of the Executive Committee until he retired in 1976.

During his career, Howard Dobbs served the life insurance industry as President of the Life Insurers Conference and of the American Life Convention, Vice President of the Health Insurance Association of America, and was a member of Board of Directors of the Institute of Life Insurance.

Throughout his career, Mr. Dobbs was an active civic volunteer, serving as President of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, the Atlanta Rotary Club and Trustee of several educational institutions including Emory University, Young Harris College, Agnes Scott College and Woodward Academy. He also served three terms as Chairman of the Fulton County Board of Health, in addition to chairing the Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Arthritis Foundation. An avid yachtsman, Mr. Dobbs spent much of his leisure time off the shores of the southern United States. He also enjoyed the natural beauty of the north Georgia mountains and shared his Tate Mountain retreat in Pickens County with friends and family.

Mr. Dobbs died on June 9, 2003, at the age of 97. He was a true Southern gentleman, exhibiting restraint and modesty in every aspect of his life. Even in times when he could have commanded the spotlight, he remained humble and forthright. He was a man of few words. His story is best told by the way he lived his life – with honesty, integrity, perseverance, and generosity of spirit. These values represent the legacy that Mr. Dobbs wished to share with those who would follow in his footsteps.
